Divorce outcomes turn on dates, documents, and disclosure — understand the process so your case doesn’t drag on for years

Divorce in Ontario is governed by the federal *Divorce Act*, but most of what actually happens in a divorce — property division, parenting arrangements, support, evidence, enforcement — is shaped by provincial legislation and the rules of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

The legal framework is more structured than people expect. A divorce requires either one year of separation, adultery, or cruelty; the "no-fault" grounds (one-year separation) account for nearly all Ontario divorces. The process can be uncontested, simple, or joint — or it can be fully litigated over years if property, children, or support are contested.

What most clients do not anticipate is how much of the case turns on dates, documents, and disclosure: the separation date, the valuation date, the full financial disclosure required by *Family Law Rules*, and the specific forms and procedures that determine whether your case moves in three months or three years.

The articles below cover the divorce questions I most often hear from clients: how long a divorce takes, what a contested divorce actually costs, what happens if the other party refuses to cooperate, the role of separation agreements, and what to do when assets or children cross international borders.
